Classroom Training


Merit offers a variety of Gold Seal certified courses, First Aid courses, and workplace enhancement seminars. Please check the events calendar for upcoming dates.


Merit’s most popular training program, STP is designed for individuals in supervisory positions. The program teaches a variety of topics to enhance supervisory and managerial skills including time management, productivity, and employee-employer relations.

Through a combination of in-class sessions and on-the-job training assignments, trainees will learn the necessary theory and related practical applications required to achieve the program objectives.

Courses Offered

Estimating Course

Designed for construction estimators and those with experience in construction who want to become estimators or improve their knowledge of estimating. Participants learn how to estimate construction projects and prepare a successful bid. This two day of lessons with in-class Instructors, plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions, is eligible for five Gold Seal credits upon successful completion.

Project Planning and Cost Control Course

The Project Planning & Cost Control course is designed to provide owners, managers, estimators, and field personnel with a general knowledge of the process of planning and controlling a project from beginning to end utilizing ways and means of monitoring, saving and controlling costs.

Construction Law

Construction owners, managers, estimators, supervisors and project managers will develop an understanding of contract law as it relates to construction and the various CCDC/CCA and other contracts used within the industry. Participants also learn how the Builders Lien Act works and other legal means to resolve construction disputes and avoid litigation. This two day of lessons with in-class Instructors, plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions, is eligible for five Gold Seal credits upon successful completion.

Communication Skills

This Gold Seal Certified Course is designed to improve skills in communication for supervisors, and management in the office and in the field. Participants will be able to identify and practice skills needed for effective communication and learn about barriers to communication. They will also learn about different communication styles and identify what their dominant style is as well as how to deal with people who have a different style of communication. The course material also provides insight about anger and how to manage it as well as help develop the skills required to supervise others in the construction industry.

Supervisory & Management Skills

Construction Foremen, Supervisors and Leaders will develop an understanding of how to manage people in a construction context. Participants will improve their skills in leadership, communication and enhance their ability to build a collaborative culture. This 2 day course, with in-class Instructor, plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions, has a value of five Gold Seal credits upon successful completion.

Lean Construction

Everyone related to the construction process has incentive to get the project done faster and at a lower cost – from the project owners who want to see tangible results for their investment to the contractors and designers who want to do their job well and move on to the next project. Lean
Construction is based on the holistic pursuit of continuous improvements aimed at minimizing costs and maximizing value on a construction project. To help contractors develop the knowledge needed to build lean, the Associated General Contractors of America developed the Lean Construction Education Program. All construction professionals will learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into lean operating systems.

Civil Estimating

The course is designed for those interested in becoming civil sitework estimators and for workers with experience in construction that desire to improve their knowledge of sitework estimating. This 2 day course, with in-class Instructor, plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions, has a value of five Gold Seal credits upon successful completion.

Project Management

The course is designed for construction owners, managers, estimators, supervisors and staff. Participants will develop skills and knowledge of how to manage a construction project. Participants will gain an understanding of the project processes and constraints encountered by project managers (using PMBoK 5th Edition approach) and how to successfully manage a complex project. This 2 day course, with in-class Instructor, plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions, has a value of five Gold Seal credits upon successful completion.
